To be fair, the letter is written in a very casual tone (which I assume is a result of a constant, positive relationship) and the point which refers to "default-on" is merely suggesting that "active-choice " doesn't sound right. I (and I guess the PM) think both terms are "jargon-y" and would fail to communicate to users what's actually happening. "Filter By Default" might be a better phrase...
