I can’t shake the sense that replacing skirts with trousers (paradoxically rendering the girls less ‘ladylike’ and more ‘boy-like’) smacks of covering Victorian ladies in swathes of cloth: those nineteenth century paragons of feminine virtue may have looked more demure, but they still fancied the pants off the local vicar.
